End of E-Scooter and Bike Pilot Scheme in York

2 Jun 2024

The City Council is poised to explore new opportunities in the realm of micro-mobility, reflecting a broader trend towards sustainable and efficient urban transport solutions.

A pioneering pilot scheme to trial the use of e-scooters and electric bikes in York has come to an end. Launched in 2020, this initiative was part of the UK Department for Transport's micro-mobility pilot program aimed at exploring sustainable and eco-friendly transportation alternatives in urban areas.

The pilot initially introduced e-scooters to the city, offering residents and visitors a convenient and "green" mode of transport. Given the positive reception and increasing interest in micro-mobility, the scheme was later expanded to include electric bikes, broadening the range of transport options available to the public.

Despite relative success and popularity, operator Tier announced in March that it would not be extending the trial beyond its contract end date of last Friday. This decision marks the end of the current phase of the micro-mobility initiative in York.

Perhaps then, fellow Yorkers, there's never been a better time to invest in a good old-fashioned bicycle? You know, the sort which doesn't need to be charged up every night by a man in a pickup truck.
