Government Complex Set to Transform York Central

Part of the Levelling Up agenda, this initiative aims to decentralise government functions and drive investment beyond London.

Next year, York Central, one of the UK’s largest brownfield sites, will get a glamorous new tenant: a government office complex housing about 2,600 civil servants, right next to the city's railway station.

In a modern twist on commuting, the new hub will feature zero parking spaces for staff, nudging them towards public transport. Why drive when you can ride? The site will offer 250 bicycle spaces and dedicated disabled parking, keeping things accessible and eco-friendly.

The transformation of York Central doesn’t stop there. An exhibition space for the National Railway Museum and shiny new infrastructure are already in the works, with plans for a bustling public square awaiting approval.

Mark Bourgeois from the Government Property Agency calls the hub a "catalyst for economic growth in the North," and it’s all part of the Levelling Up agenda, spreading investment beyond London.

So, with construction kicking off next year, York Central is gearing up to become a buzzing blend of history, modernity, and sustainable living. Stay tuned - York’s about to get a whole lot busier, and a whole lot greener!
