Significant Improvement in Air Quality

25 Jun 2024

The most recent air quality report showed that most of York met the objective for pollution levels of NO2 not exceeding 40 micrograms per cubic metre.

York's air quality significantly improved in 2023, according to data presented to the council’s Executive by Environmental Protection Manager Mike Southcomb. Monitoring stations across the city showed better air quality compared to the previous year.

Councillor Jenny Kent, Environment Executive Member, highlighted a 10 percent reduction in maximum pollution levels at Gillygate and Lord Mayor’s Walk, marking a slow but sustained improvement. The air quality report confirmed that most areas in York met the objective of maintaining nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels below 40 micrograms per cubic metre annually.

These positive results reflect the council's dedicated efforts to enhance air quality through various environmental protection measures. The ongoing commitment to reducing pollution ensures a healthier environment for York's residents and visitors.
