St Michael Le Belfry Church Set for Refurbishment

6 Jun 2024

York's city centre is preparing for a significant transformation as major repairs and refurbishment works are set to begin on the 500-year-old St Michael Le Belfry church.

This project marks the first extensive building refurbishment for the church in over 150 years. Constructed between 1525 and 1537, St Michael le Belfrey is famed as the baptism place of Guy Fawkes in 1570. The upcoming repairs include essential work such as a new roof, masonry repairs, and conservation of medieval stained glass.

Local construction company Simpson have been awarded the prestigious contract, estimated at £11.5 million, for the 18-24 month project named 'Impact'.

Rev Andy Baker, Interim Priest in Charge at The Belfrey, expressed confidence in Simpson's expertise and their work on projects like Salford Cathedral and York Minster's Centre of Excellence. He added, "The refurbishment and restoration project will certainly transform St Michael le Belfrey and, in doing so, enhance the facilities for the clergy team, congregation, and the local community, ensuring this historical place of worship continues to serve its city."

As the church played a vital role in York's history, the Impact project aims to beautifully restore and preserve this medieval landmark whilst making it more accessible and flexible for future generations. We shall certainly see.
