Uber Reinstated in York After Six-Year Ban

11 Jun 2024

The City of York Council's licensing committee voted in favour of the ride-hailing giant's application on Tuesday.

Uber has secured a licence to operate in York once again following a six-year prohibition.

The decision followed a heated four-hour meeting, which included a protest by the York City Taxi Association outside the council offices. The association has been vocal in its opposition to Uber's return, citing concerns over competition and regulation.

As part of the newly granted licence, Uber drivers are explicitly prohibited from parking in hackney carriage spaces, addressing one of the key issues raised by local taxi drivers.

Uber's return to York signifies a notable shift in the city's approach to private hire services, potentially reshaping the local transportation landscape.
