Among the bold proposals are sleek light rail transit lines, water taxis gliding through York's waterways, and discounted parking perks for electric cars.

York is on the cusp of a transport revolution, with the City of York Council targeting a 20% reduction in traffic by 2030. Recently published details from the emerging Local Transport Strategy & Plan suggest transformative changes for the city's mobility landscape.

The council's innovative proposals include the introduction of sleek light rail transit lines and water taxis, offering a scenic alternative to road travel. Additionally, parking perks for electric vehicles aim to incentivise greener transportation choices.

The strategy also envisions a pedestrian-friendly future with a priority walking and wheeling network, continuous level surfaces in the city centre, and upgraded cycling facilities with segregated lanes and priority signals. Accessibility is key, with plans for community hubs featuring parcel delivery points, safe cycle storage, and mobility scooter hire.

Public transport could see significant enhancements, with extensions to the bus network, the possibility of bus rapid transit services, and an integrated fares policy to make bus use more affordable. The council is considering water-based access to the city centre, leveraging existing tour boat services or introducing water taxis from park and ride locations.

A comprehensive parking strategy aims to make park-and-ride, buses, walking, and cycling more attractive options. Differential parking charges will incentivise the replacement of internal combustion engine vehicles with electric or hybrid alternatives.

Safety is paramount, with proposals to adopt a 20mph speed limit in residential areas, near schools, and in retail zones. The Vision Zero approach aims to eliminate all road fatalities and serious injuries. For freight, the plan includes transhipment facilities on the edge of the city centre and the promotion of cargo bikes and electric vehicles under 3.5 tonnes.

As these plans move toward public consultation, York stands to become a model for modern, sustainable, and efficient urban transport.
