Liberation’s Dance, 2022 by Amber Sykes.

Signed Acrylic on Reclaimed Canvas; 27.6 x 15.7 in. (70 x 40 cm).

In “Liberation’s Dance”, I poured myself onto the canvas, fully and freely. Using my hands as the paintbrush and my soul as the substance, I broke free from perfectionism that had confined me for three hours prior. Why did I initially hold back from expression? I asked myself, as “Liberation’s Dance” came to a completion. Why did I inhibit the truth of myself, even in the privacy of my own studio?

The introspection that followed led me to realise that a withdrawal from expression is not an uncommon tendency independent to me. In fact, most of us frequently deny ourselves and the world the delivery of our unique voices. But why?

Of course, functionality has its role. We require a functional shell to navigate social conventions and to accommodate to situations. Yet, the tragedy arises when one’s whole life is premised upon conformity, expending their energy to try and be ‘normal’. It is a tragedy to censor the truest parts of self-expression and forfeit weirdness for acceptance. Or worse, when societal chains are so tight that, even in privacy, we suppress our creative voices.

Creativity thrives when we grant ourselves the liberty to transcend beyond the functional shell that society imposes upon us so we can re-concentrate ourselves from all the diluting and shrinking. Creativity is a moment where we won’t just step outside of the box, but we obliterate the thing, finally pouring ourselves all over. Like I did with “Liberation’s dance”, I released the yearning that was craving to use my bare hands to smudge and slide and fling paint all over. And what more? Void of shame.

In this expressive artwork, I have constructed a new realm where fear is exchanged for self-compassion. “Liberation’s Dance invites you to embrace your own expression by ultimately doing whatever causes your soul to dance. Uniqueness is our most wonderful human attribute, and it only becomes more wonderful when shared.
