ORCHARD by Desmond Clarke.

Orchard is the expression of two things I love most about algorithmic art - the first is its ability to capture the forms of the natural world, which I love more than anything else, while the second is the incredible richness and diversity it can create.

Each one of the trees in this piece is generated with exactly the same process, but with random variation introduced at each decision point. This gives rise to the different “species”, forms and unique characters of each tree in the orchard.

One could go on generating trees practically forever before any two were the same. My role as the artist is to explore this infinite diversity of forms, and select those ones I think capture and express it the most elegantly.

I’ve enjoyed wandering through this mathematical orchard, and I hope you do too.
